Bequests

Dasch Foundation - Planned Giving - Donate to DASCH

Bequests enable the DASCH Foundation to build a solid funding base that will support resident care and specialized programs in the long term. By including us in your Will, you are helping us build a strong and healthy future for our clients.

A “bequest” is a gift of cash or property made in a Will, and is one of the ways donors choose to make a gift to the DASCH Foundation. A bequest entitles your estate to a tax credit for the final income tax return, thereby giving your heirs protection by reducing estate tax liability.

 

DASCH Foundation Most bequests fall into 2 general categories, Unrestricted or Restricted.

Unrestricted Bequest

Allows the DASCH Foundation to use your gift where it is needed most

Restricted Bequest

You specify where and how your gift should be used. The most common types of bequests are either General, Residual, or Contingent:

  • General Bequest - DASCH Foundation receives a specified amount of a gift, usually cash
  • Residual Bequest - DASCH Foundation would receive all or a percentage of the remainder of your estate after other specific legacies have been fulfilled (e.g. 50% of the remaining assets)
  • Contingent Bequest - DASCH Foundation would receive all or a share of the estate only in the event of the prior death of other named beneficiaries

Public Securities

If you want to partner with the DASCH Foundation, a tax effective method of giving is via the donation of stocks, bonds or mutual funds that have appreciated in value.

Eligible securities are “listed securities” or “publicly traded securities” which include:

  • stocks and bonds
  • treasury bills
  • warrants and futures traded on approved stock exchanges
  • mutual funds offered by Canadian Mutual fund management companies

Benefit of Gifting a Security

The main benefit of gifting a public security to the DASCH Foundation is that the tax on your investment’s capital gain (the difference between what you paid for the securities and their current value) can be reduced.

  • When you donate securities as a charitable gift after May 1, 2006 the amount of tax you pay on the capital gain is zero.
  • You will receive a charitable tax receipt for the value of the securities just as if you donated the equal amount in cash.

Life Insurance

A gift of a life insurance policy to the DASCH Foundation will allow us to care for the future needs of our lifetime clients.

When you name the DASCH Foundation owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy, you will receive a charitable donation receipt for your premium payments. If a policy has been paid up, you will receive a charitable donation receipt for the policy’s current cash surrender value, less any outstanding loans against it.

For policies and premiums still owing, in the year of the gift, you will receive a charitable donation receipt for the present cash value of the policy, as well as receipts for subsequent payments.
