Disability Employment Awareness Month Recap

DASCHWorks in action

During October, in recognition of Disability Employment Awareness Month, we visited with Jeff, Denis, and Stanford, three DASCHWorks participants, at their workplaces to learn more about their roles.

Jeff

Working in the Service Wash at Mercedes-Benz Winnipeg, Jeff is responsible for making sure every vehicle coming out of the wash bay is spic and span.

Jeff says his favourite part of the job is his coworkers.

“They’re amazing. It’s a privilege to work here,” Jeff says.

All his coworkers shared the same sentiment about Jeff, praising his great attitude and work ethic.

A man of many talents, we’d be remiss not to mention Jeff’s side hustle as DJ Jett, often providing entertainment for various events in Winnipeg, including DASCH socials and BBQs.

Denis

Denis works as a Warehouse Labourer at Reliable OHD a division of Allmar Inc. where he helps pick parts for orders.

He remembers feeling overwhelmed with all there was to learn when he first started, but we’ve watched his confidence grow as he’s gotten into the groove. Denis credits his love of learning for helping him excel in his role and be a good teammate.

“Being part of such a supportive group not only helps me earn money but also makes me feel valued in our community,” Denis says, “It feels great to contribute something important.”

Stanford

Stanford is one of the more recently employed DASCHWorks participants, working as a part-time Clerk at Leila Pharmacy. He sorts through returned and unused medication, disposing of it properly and removing all labels for shredding later.

As he transitions into his new job, Stanford still attends DASCHWorks a few days a week to  continue developing his skills so he can keep growing in his role!

“I really enjoy working at the pharmacy,” Stanford says, “ I’ve made some good friends, I like earning my own money, and it feels nice to be part of the community.”
