The Centre for Inclusion & Citizenship in Canada defines employment as “…an important milestone for all individuals, regardless of ability. Employment is a social determinant of health, contributing to improved physical and mental health, including self-esteem, confidence, and greater life satisfaction. Employment can provide a structured routine and a social community/network, as well as provide purpose and a sense of meaningful contribution to society.”

For youth and adults with intellectual disabilities, it is challenging to find and maintain meaningful, long-term employment for a number of reasons such as lack of appropriate skills training and negative stereotypes. With the lack of inclusion in the workforce, these youth and adults often face numerous social barriers, endure financial stress and lack confidence in themselves.

The 2019 DASCH Holiday Campaign is your opportunity to give the gift of empowerment to the individuals in our community whose talents are often overlooked. With your support, we can provide our differently-abled youth and adults with individualized, personal vocational training designed to: identify career interests and employment skills, teach work behaviours, improve problem-solving skills, provide ongoing feedback for progress, identify cooperative programs and internships, and support independence through teaching life skills such as taking the bus to work.

Our campaign goal is $100,000 in order to effectively work with individuals on their journey to a successful career. We need your help in reaching our goal and ask that you consider making a gift  before December 31, 2019.

Your holiday gift will:

• Ensure our youth and adults are properly trained for their career choice with experts and appropriate equipment;
• Provide pre and post employment support such as resume-building, interview preparation, customized skills training and transition into the workforce;
• Foster independence, improve self-esteem and success for individuals who are often omitted;
• Promote inclusion and community engagement for all people.
