Dante’s Dream Trip to Montreal

When Dante, a young man we support, first shared his desire to visit Montreal, the DASCH team knew how special of a trip it was to make happen. Dante has a deep love for French language and culture—he even taught himself to speak French and never misses the Festival du Voyageur (check out this post to see him enjoying the festival). So when he asked to go on a trip earlier this year, the planning wheels quickly started turning.

Come May, it was time to pack his bags! Dante traveled with a support worker who also speaks French, giving him the perfect chance to practice. “I felt more confident speaking French as the trip went on,” Dante said.

The highlights? A ride on big Ferris wheel, a visit to the Flag Shop (Dante is a huge fan of flags of all kinds), a bus tour around the city, and the Museum of Illusions. He loved learning more about the culture and meeting new people. And of course, no trip to Montreal would be complete without enjoying some poutine and whale tails!

Trip Planning at DASCH

Planning a trip like this at DASCH begins when the person we support shares an interest in traveling and has an idea of where they might like to go. From there, together we help them review their financial plan, ensure they understand the costs, and find support workers who are ready and able travel with them. Safety is key, so planning for emergencies and confirming travel details is part of the process. The person we support is involved every step of the way.

Once the person and their support team approve the trip plan, the countdown begins! They book flights, hotels, and activities, and the excitement starts to build. After the trip, the person we support and their support team always have a debrief to celebrate what went well and learn how we can make the next adventure even better.

Dante’s journey to Montreal was more than just a vacation—it was a dream come true! We’re proud to help make dreams like his a reality.
